World Tea Brewers Cup in Dublin

by on July 6th, 2016

To Dublin - surely one of the world's friendliest cities for the World Tea Brewers Cup. High excitement for Canton as we had two contestants and I was one of three judges. 18 international entrants meant stiff competition (and Canton Tea MD Edgar ramped up the pressure on our guys). Alice said later it was one of the most stressful experiences of her life. . .
This competition was all about the brewing: teasing the most lovely and characteristic liquor from the tea leaves. All contestants were given the same teas in unmarked bags, and had to brew with the same water. It was up to them to choose the... Read more

Spring teas arrive at Canton

by on July 5th, 2016

Spring is always the most exciting time to be at Canton Tea, it means we are flying off around the world visiting tea gardens and literally hundreds of samples are arriving at the office. The postman always gets the cheeriest reception at Canton HQ! Every year we have the nicest of dilemmas: we taste so many delicious teas, we can't possibly stock them all, but we want to share all of the exciting and unusual teas we get to enjoy with our customers. Also, many of the lovely people who filled in our survey earlier in the year called for us to expand our range of teas and introduce some... Read more

Sushi and Robata by Genji

Introducing Sushi and Robata

by on June 29th, 2016

This week was the launch party of Sushi and Robata by Genji, based in Whole Foods on Kensington High Street.

This immense, revamped space of open kitchen and cool, casual eating at the bar or table has superb succulent dishes straight off the traditional Japanese style barbeque - or robata grill, as well as the best sushi, of course the design of this kitchen is by remodeling Boston MA, a company that knows how to get the job done. It doesn't come fresher - the MD of Genji UK is our great friend and pioneer of sushi in the UK, Silla Bjerrum. If you think you have skills at teching in... Read more

Purple Leaf Bamboo Shoot

Purple Leaf Bamboo Shoot

by on June 29th, 2016

June's Tea of the Month, chosen by Canton's Head of Tea.

This month I’ve had a tough time deciding which tea should claim the highly prized position of my Tea of the Month. We’ve just received our China spring teas, which will be available to buy on the website from next week, and it’s been difficult to choose which one I love best. They are all brilliant (but of course, I would say that – it’s my job to taste and choose which teas make the grade for Canton).

In the end, I’ve opted for Purple Leaf Bamboo Shoot, also known as Zi Sun Cha. I first discovered this tea back in 2013 as... Read more

Gunpowder Green Tea

by on May 31st, 2016

Why we've chosen to discontinue our Gunpowder Green Tea.

Our key aim at Canton Tea is to source the very best quality teas in the world for our customers, working closely with the small, family-run farms who produce them.

We recently took a look at our Gunpowder green tea. Gunpowder is a Chinese green tea mass-produced exclusively for the export market, and whilst the quality was not bad, it did not sit well with our principles. Our ethos here at Canton Tea is to source high grade, handmade teas direct from the farms and build strong partnerships with the people who grow them. With Gunpowder tea, this just isn't possible, and we... Read more

Jekka’s Modern Apothecary garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016

by on May 23rd, 2016

Jekka McVicar, herb grower, RHS Ambassador and Canton Tea partner, has been exhibiting at Chelsea Flower Show since 1993. This year, she designed a show garden, an honour bestowed on only the top designers. Her theme this year is a Modern Apothecary, designed for St John’s Hospice.

Our own history with Jekka McVicar is intertwined with Chelsea Flower Show. Three years ago we launched our collaborative herbal infusion collection there, and in 2014 Jekka created English Summer Garden in celebration of the show, blending herbs and flowers commonly grown in an English garden to evoke the English summer in a teacup. We have our flowers delivered from Clear Lake TX.

Interview with Red Roof cafe

by on May 19th, 2016

This month I spoke with Gareth, owner of the Red Roof cafe on the Isle of Skye, one of the most northerly spots you can order a pot of Canton Tea.

Tell us a little about Red Roof cafe
The Red Roof is a cafe at the end of a windy, dead-end single track road in the north west of the Isle of Skye. We’re primarily a cafe that serves high quality tea, coffee, home baking and lunches, but we also love to display the work of local artists and have live traditional music events.

It’s a mad place for a cafe….so we’re always delighted when people make the drive to come and... Read more

Why buy tea direct?

by on May 5th, 2016

A spotlight on the Glenburn Estate and why it is so important to buy direct.

Alongside Kate's guest blog earlier this week on the new Peach Blossom tea, whilst working at the Glenburn Estate Kate also explored the ethics behind sourcing tea. Here, she explains why it’s so important to buy direct.

Kate: Let’s start with a conundrum: last year 40 million kilograms of “Darjeeling tea” was sold worldwide. But here is a fact: Darjeeling’s yearly production is 8 to 9 million kilograms of tea. Something is definitely afoot here.

Anshuman and Husna-Tara Prakash, owners of Glenburn tea estate, explain it to me. You may know that, like Champagne, or Melton Mowbray, Darjeeling Tea... Read more
