Wu Yi Yellow Rose

A beautifully perfumed and highly floral rock oolong, harvested high on Wu Yi mountain.
A lightly oxidised oolong from the famous Wu Yi Mountains of northern Fujian. Prized for its naturally perfumed fragrance, this exceptional tea is honey sweet with bright notes of jasmine and rose, offset against zesty grapefruit and a classic Wu Yi minerality. The leaves are just lightly oxidised, but a lengthy roasting process adds an intense richness to the flavour, with notes of cocoa that linger on the palate.

The Huang Mei Gui (Yellow Rose) is a relatively new cultivar, developed in 2002 as a hybrid of two highly floral varietals- Huang Jin Gui (Golden Osmanthus) and Huang Dan (Golden Dawn). This gives the resulting cultivar incredible, uplifting floral aromas making it a highly sought after new tea from the region. The leaves are only lightly oxidised, to around 40%, so that they maintain these floral characteristics. The leaves are roasted four times in a bamboo basket over smouldering charcoal made of local pine wood, a low heat slowly develops the characteristic roasted cocoa notes, yet allows the tea to maintain a level of fresh floweriness that could even be likened to some Dan Cong oolongs. After roasting, the tea is rested for six months to allow the flavours to balance perfectly.
Wu Yi oolongs are always something to get excited about, and are some of the most famous and celebrated Chinese oolongs in the world. Cool air, high humidity and rocky yet fertile soil provides a unique terroir that gives teas from this area their characteristic mineral flavours, reminiscent of rain washed stone, or in Chinese, “Yan Yun” or “rock rhyme”.
