Aged Tie Guan Yin (Heavy Roast)
Aged Tie Guan Yin (Heavy Roast)
This aged tea from 2007 is handmade on a traditional Anxi Farm in the Fujian Province. Heavily roasted, it has a deep, complex flavour that will please fans of Wuyi oolongs such as Da Hong Pao and Traditional Shui Xian. The initial rich sweet cocoa flavour develops into a long, lingering, dark fruit taste, with hints of toasted oats and cinnamon along the way.

Mature, and plenty of body ... Review by David

Although billed as heavy roast, this tea doesn't have quite the dark swirling cloak of woodsmoke and malt, such as other oolongs at the high-roast end of the spectrum eg Big Red Robe and Shui Xian. It does indeed have the best of their attributes, but in a more subtle and palate-provoking form. In addition to the burnt Siena and chocolate-vanilla savours of the above, there a deep layer of mellowness and maturity, a chestnut-honey fruitfullness, giving a deeply satisfying, lingering, and distinctly more-ish taste. This is a first rate tea if you like them a bit more mature, with plenty of body to grapple with. I can't think why nobody else has reviewed this tea: it is by far the best oolong I have tasted from CTC, or anywhere else for that matter. It keeps going too, infusion after infusion. Anyone who appreciates oolong tea must have a caddy of this: amaze your guests! (Or, as I do, keep it strictly for yourself ... ) (Posted on 3/12/12)
