Pouchong (Baozhong)
Pouchong Green Tea | Wenshan Baozhong
Other names: Baozhong Tea, Baochong, Bao Zhong Tea
Always taking gold at the Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards, our Pouchong from a small family-run farm in Taiwan.
This is one of our favourite teas and exclusive to Canton Tea Co. Grown high on the slopes of Wen Shan, Taipei county, by farmer Xu, it is very refreshing with smooth floral notes and a sweet apricot finish. The locals call it a green tea, but technically it is a very lightly oxidised oolong tea. The big twisted leaves produce a bright yellow/green liquor that is creamy soft and delicious. This is the second year we've had a pouchong that has been picked with mechanical shears. The quality of the leaves is excellent but it means the costs are kept down which is reflected in the price.
Farmer Xu’s comments
“This is a good year for quality Pouchong.”
Winner over successive years of The Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards

This Pouchong is dark, delicious and wonderful. The leaves are long, spindly and hard -- it smells incredibly fresh.
There is absolutely nothing bad about it at all. It's the best Pouchong I've had in a long time.
This Canton Tea Co Pouchong has very dark-green leaves, almost black and in perfect shape. And I really mean in perfect shape – no broken leaves, not even the smallest trace of dust in the bottom of the package.

Very special smooth and creamy tea
Review by Marcin

Tastes like very good oolong with fresh notes of fine green tea. Its so smooth and creamy i cant stop myself from closing my eyes to contemplate its taste and scent, sometimes it takes me to the rocky cliff of surrounded in mist Taiwanese mountains and i can almost hear wind stroking fresh blades of grass, then I'm opening my eyes, taking another sip and closing them again. Very special tea. (Posted on 4/16/13)

Exceptional and unusual!

This tea is really delicious - unlike any other green tea I have ever tasted, and a bit more like an Oolong really - delicate floral taste and aroma. A great discovery, this is going to be a favourite for me. Even my daughter, who usually finds green teas too bitter, really liked this one. (Posted on 4/1/13)

No going back after tasting pouchong!
Review by Debbie

I love pouchong tea, I have to have it first thing in the morning to begin my day. After trying various off the shelf varieties before finding the Canton Tea Company I appreciate how smooth and delicious the taste of pouchong is by comparison to the bitter tea bag variety. There's no going back! (Posted on 2/22/13)

Smells of soft, sweet mountain flowers. Tastes smooth and velvety; never bitter (even when left for nearly 10 minutes due to a phone call interrupting the tea making the flavours were just 'fuller'). (Posted on 2/9/13)

I started my green tea experience with a Canton Tea taster pack. Jade Tips are good but a pot of Pouchong for me is the most perfect way to face the day. (Posted on 1/21/13)

Velvety smooth - Pouchong Green (Baozhong)
Review by Cat_W

This is a gorgeous tea! It is so smooth, velvety and "soft" with gentle fresh, floral tones. This is my favourite of all the teas! I was surprised as I didn't think I'd find another tea to replace my loyal Buddha Supreme - but now I have! I agree with Trish's review above! (Posted on 11/30/12)

A unique experience.

This is a fantastic tea: my first pouchong and I was very pleasantly surprised. It really is nothing like either green or oolong tea. There are notes of elderflower and jasmine, with none of the tartness present in many greens or the maltiness I find in oolongs. It can be steeped for long periods without becoming bitter; and if it's not brewed for long it still has a lovely mild flavour.
I thoroughly recommend this truly unique tea. I certainly don't choose it every time but I never regret it when I do! (Posted on 7/4/12)

Mix of green and oolong
Review by Trish
-
Ah....yet another favourite from Canton Tea! I love Oolongs like Iron Buddha and Anxi Rou Gui but also some of the green teas too (particularly with jasmine - another favourite!) but this is a delightful mix of the two - you get the lovely creaminess of the Oolong with the freshness of a green tea. But it's the scent that does it for me - deliciously flowery and just to die for. It lingers and fills you with sunshine! I can make 4 infusions from this tea so it somewhat salves my conscience on the price! (Posted on 6/30/12)

A wonderful bright green tea with a lovely flavour. Streets ahead of what passes for green tea in mainstream tea bags. (Posted on 6/25/12)

Distinctly moreish.
Review by David
-
Very tasty green tea - I usually prefer oolongs and blacks, but this pouchong verges along towards the oolong for its taste: full of fruit, sort of melon and pumpkin, buttery mouthfeel, distinctly moreish. Gives a good satisfying feel all around the palate, you keep going back for more. And it keeps on infusing! (Posted on 6/8/12)

Just brewed this lovely Pouchong. Taste is fresh and not bitterness at all. A really easy to brew green tea. I might order some more as I've only got the 10gr sample. Canton tea co surprises me everytime I open and brew a new tea.

A beautiful tea for both green and oolong drinkers
Review by teareviewblog.com

The liquor is a vibrant bright green that screams springtime. It looks light and refreshing, and has a clean mellow taste...There is also a subtle sweetness that keeps me coming back for another sip.
This tea feels soft and buttery on the tongue, and when you add in the light refreshing taste, it is a very pleasant experience. I love the depth that the roasty flavor adds to the overall vegetal sweetness.

I like the green of this oolong!
Review by Amy in Southern California
-
This is a fine baozhong and a great value. It is all at once smooth and gentle and sweet with a gorgeous minty-green liquor. The stewed leaves are quite large and luscious. It is the green of this oolong that stands out for me while the roasted notes remain nicely in the background. I highly recommend this tea for everyday sipping! (Posted on 4/11/11)

Light and magical

I bought this as a green tea and found it had the fragrance of an Oolong ad then read that this is what it is - it is very light, with a very slight magical perfume which is still present through the second cup. Very special. (Posted on 3/27/11)

A very decent and deceptive "gr-oolong" tea
Review by Geoff at teaviews.com
-
"The liquor brewed to a sparkling, light green with a kelpy scent wafting from the cup steam. It’s flavor really reminded me of an oolong; Ti Guanyin particularly, thanks to its toastiness ... A very decent and deceptive “gr-oolong” tea."

I resisted trying a Pouchong (Baozhong…whatever) because I thought it was just another type of oolong. Turns out that in some circles – and according to the Almighty Wiki – it’s sometimes given its own classification; like yellow tea. Canton’s offering smelled like a grape-rich green tea, but tasted like a green-style oolong. The flavor was smoky, non-astringent, fruity, kelpy, and all-around decent. Quite a feat for a “gr-oolong”.

"This tea combines the floral and fruity qualities of a great oolong while paradoxically feeling green, without being vegetal. Farmer Xu sure knows what he’s doing! I could go on and on but you should just try it for yourself. Highly recommended!"

Fresh, delicious and improves with each infusion
Review by Gilly

This is now my favourite all day long tea.. Apart from tasting fresh and delicious, it works out at incredibly good value because each infusion gets better so one pot can be topped up many times. It does not get bitter even if left to steep for a long time. (Posted on 6/19/10)

Pouchong green from Canton is among the best Pouchongs I’ve had
Review by Jamie
-
I like green tea but it’s never the first tea I reach for. I generally oversteep it and then fight to get past the bitter taste of my own forgetfulness. A friend of mine swears by the bitterness of green, says that you don’t get the full benefit without oversteeping it…. erm I don’t know. He’s cool but always leaves me shaking my head, so misguided. So green tea is just okay for me unless it’s Pouchong.
Pouchong green from Canton is among the best Pouchongs I’ve had. It’s a triple threat when it comes to tea. It’s an antioxidant and an antimutagenic and it’s tasty all in one. The leaves are big, dark, and twisted just right (reminds me of another one of my friends hmm). The tea brews to a light golden yellow, almost clear, like liquid sunshine. I put stevia in the first brew (out of habit with greens) but found it was a bit much and it took away from the clean taste of the tea. Second steep, without stevia, brewed up just as clean and with a slight melon scent. Third steep was a bit longer (on purpose) and it still was smooth and almost clear.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pouchong or who shy away from greens the way I do, this is one tea you must try. This is a high quality tea that will not disappoint.
