Pouchong Green Tea | Wenshan Baozhong

Other names: Baozhong Tea, Baochong, Bao Zhong Tea

For the last two years, our Pouchong from a small family-run farm in Taiwan has taken gold at the Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards.

This is one of our favourite teas and exclusive to Canton Tea Co. Grown high on the slopes of Wen Shan, Taipei county, by farmer Xu, it is very refreshing with smooth floral notes and a sweet apricot finish. The locals call it a green tea, but it is actually a very lightly oxidised oolong tea. The big twisted leaves produce a bright yellow/green liquor that is creamy soft and delicious. This is the first year we've had a pouchong that has been picked with mechanical shears . The quality of the leaves is excellent but it means the costs are kept down which is reflected in the price.

Farmer Xu’s comments
“This is a a good year for quality Pouchong.”

Winner over successive years of The Guild of Fine Food Great Taste Awards

Origin Pingling, Wen Shan, Taipei County, Taiwan
Tea Farm Xu Family Farm
Harvest Date Spring 2011
Leaf Appearance Long, large, twisted dark green leaves
Aroma The freshly-brewed liquor has the toasted biscuit aroma of an oolong as well as the fresh florals of a green
Liquor Bright golden-green becoming more amber with each infusion
Tasting Notes Pouchong has smooth, refreshing fruit notes and a hint of floral sweet pea. The characteristics change with each infusion, becoming slightly softer and less ‘green’
Quick Brewing Instructions Use 1tsp to 1 tbs per cup (200ml); water temperature around 80°C (176°F): and infuse 2-4 mins. A forgiving, easy-to-brew tea - even if the leaves steep for a very long time it still tastes bright and smooth.

This Pouchong is dark, delicious and wonderful. The leaves are long, spindly and hard -- it smells incredibly fresh. There is absolutely nothing bad about it at all. It's the best Pouchong I've had in a long time.
This Canton Tea Co Pouchong has very dark-green leaves, almost black and in perfect shape. And I really mean in perfect shape – no broken leaves, not even the smallest trace of dust in the bottom of the package.
