Canton Assam

Superb Assam with an award-winning tea from the Khongea Estate.

We have waited a long time to bring in our own house Assam. Now we have one to shout about and have made it a Canton signature tea. It is a blend of two, high grade, Khongea Estate teas - one of which has just won the North American Tea Championships in the Assam category. That's how good it is. The family-owned estate is known to us and we are delighted to be working closely with them.

Do what Assam is made to do and steep the leaves for several minutes to get a really good, strong, dark liquor that is smooth and rich with notes of fruit. Not heavily malty, but brisk and full-bodied making it a classic breakfast tea which works well with milk. As with all of our teas, it can also be brewed light and quick and enjoyed without milk. The golden tips you can see in the dry leaf is the higher grade CL.GFBOP: Clonal Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe. For a further explanation of what that means see below - or trust us, it's very, very good.

Superb Everyday Assam

/ 5

This Assam is superb for the price. Its not full on malty which is what I normally go for is an Assam, instead its bright, clean and very fresh. Quite different from most other Assams and very refreshing as well. If you like Assam you have to give this one a try it offers something very unique at its price point!

"Deeper in flavour and more mouth-filling than the subtle, lightly malty liquor of Khongea gold, this is my chosen start-the-day brew on mornings when I need a little more encouragement to get going! It has all the strong, sweet, malty notes that really wake up both my palate and my brain." - Jane Pettigrew

THE ESTATE

The Khongea estate in the Sibsagar (now known as Sivasagar) region of Assam was established in the late 19th century by two tea planting ladies. This area on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River is at the very heart of tea production in Assam and home to some of the best known estates. In 1949 the estate came under ownership of the Prakash family who have had it ever since (they also own the Glenburn estate in Darjeeling). The chairman of the of the company is currently Sudhir Prakash. The estate manager is Mr Singh, who has been at the estate for 40 years- he is one of the longest serving managers in the industry. The estate has 450 hectares of plantation, produce 1.2 million kgs of tea per year (though yields were lower this year due to inclement weather). They have a permanent workforce of 1202 people and the estate comprises three villages, two schools and a hospital.

THE BLEND

TGFOP: Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe.
This is a whole leaf grade - the leaves are dark, quite small and wiry. These provide the traditional rich malty Assam flavour.

CL.GFBOP: Clonal Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe.
This is the element that really makes the blend special and sets it apart from other Assam blends. This is a broken leaf tea containing lots of golden tips. It is quite unusual for an Assam in that is is not hugely malty, but has excellent strength and colour and lends a very bright, fresh element to the blend.

CL or 'clonal' means the tea is made only from specially reserved clone plants. The clone is Panetola126. Clonal teas are made with one particular clone, rather than standard assams which are usually a blend of many. These teas are grown from cuttings rather than seeds which ensures the desirable characteristics from the original plant are held true and effectively each plant is a clone of the original mother plant. Panetola126 is particularly sought after for it's good golden tips.
